Current Projects

In addition to my work with students, I am also currently engaged in several ongoing research projects. Below, you can find descriptions and links to this work.

Solidarity Economics

The Program for Environmental and Regional Equity at the University of Southern California and the Institute for Social Transformation at UC Santa Cruz have created a joint project called Solidarity-at-Scale. This project draws on researchers, organizers, stakeholders, and policymakers to provide a vision for our economy; to identify opportunities, eliminate barriers, and promote new narratives to build a more inclusive economy.

This project intends to engage in “public theorizing” with social movement thinkers and leaders like you, through a series of interconnected events, articles, and communications strategies to inform a new economics framework. We want to discuss both how we should think about and describe “our economy” and the initial policy steps that could move the state in the direction of solidarity economics.

On Demand and On the Edge

Gig workers were in high demand before the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, delivery services are even more popular than ever, as are the gig workers providing these services. This study presents the results of a unique, in-person representative survey of on-demand ride-hailing and delivery workers in San Francisco, the home of many of the most prominent companies providing platform-based services, including Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and Instacart. This study was begun before the coronavirus outbreak in partnership with Jobs with Justice, but also includes a more recent survey aimed at understanding how the outbreak has impacted this critical workforce.
